European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
