At least 11 of the weather balloons, transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes, have been collected so far

Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.

Aviation Problems

The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.

As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

International Illegal Trade

Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."

Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Regional Consequences

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.

Illegal Transport Methods

In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

International Concerns

These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.

Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
