Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such treatments must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
